Track Summary

Web site: http://www.wakefieldpark.com.au/

Location: Goulburn, NSW, Australia (2.5hr South of Sydney and 1 Hour North of Canberra)

Wakefield was resurfaced in December 2007 and there is a great summary of the changes here http://wp.circuitclub.com.au/?p=357

Introduction

Wakefield Park has been designed from the outset to be a club circuit with an emphasis on promoting club racing. One of the features of Wakefield is that there is very little in the way of concrete walls and other barriers. This makes it, relatively speaking, a safer race track. Wakefield also promotes "No Speed Limit Days" where drivers without racing licenses can bring their street cars to the track.

Wakefield Park hosts events such as a round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercars series, V8 BrUtes, Club days, Historic car racing, Bikes, Go-karting etc.

Track Guide

This track guide is based on my experiences in a Pulsar SSS, Suzuki Gti and Mazda RX8.

This track guide starts with us driving down the main straight. The track runs in a clockwise direction.

Near the end of the end of the straight is Turn 1, a kink to the right. This can usually be taken flat-out with a little steering and is a braking point in some cars. Brake hard for the right hander (Turn 2). This can be taken in 3rd and can be taken faster than it would appear. Let the car drift out wide to the left and then position the car on the right hand side of the track for the Turn 3.

The run up to turn 3 is uphill so an engine with lots of torque is a significant advantage here. Position the car on the right hand side of the track. At the top of this incline brake and turn hard left into Turn 3 and then almost straight away turn right into Turn 4.

There is a short piece of straight road before turning into the even tighter Turn 5. Depending on the car and driver you may back over the throttle or even dab the brakes here before turning in.

Continue to turn left into Turn 6 and ride the right hand kerb. Stay to the right and brake hard. Turn 8 is a difficult one because drivers are often sucked into braking too late and under-steering badly as they try to make the left hand turn. It is better to brake earlier and keep a tight line for a better corner speed and exit. In most cars it is debatable whether to drop to 2nd gear or stay in 3rd gear for this corner.

Continue to steer the car to the left hand side of the track for Turn 9 and turn medium right. Next there is a small straight before Turn 10. Turn 10 is a medium right where the emphasis is getting a good exit onto the main straight. Common mistakes are to run wide onto the dirt or slide the back under power coming onto the straight.
