It was the venue of the inaugural Formula One Chinese Grand Prix on 26 September 2004. In common with many other new Formula One circuits, it was designed by Hermann Tilke. Contrary to popular belief, the resemblance of the track layout with the Chinese character shang (上), which means 'above' or 'ascend', was not intentional, but rather coincidental. One lap lasts 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometres). Other events held at the circuit include a round of the MotoGP world championship, and the Australian-based V8 Supercar championship. From 2006 onwards, it will host a round of the A1 Grand Prix series, and is the last race on the A1 2006 calendar.
