Consideration to speed, safety and passing possibilities as well as spectator viewing have been combined to provide what is to be a benchmark for circuit design into the next century Queensland Raceway is 3.12 km long and 12 metres wide. Racing direction is clockwise. There are six corners, with four gravel traps, four overtaking areas under brakes. The circuit has a slight rise and fall of around 2m for drainage. The circuit was designed by Tony Slattery with input from car and motorcycle racing authorities including CAMS circuit expert Professor Rod Troutbeck. The circuit is licenced by Australian motorsport's two peak bodies, CAMS Limited and Motorcycling Australia. The design was checked with an FIA simulation model, which showed a theoretical top speed in a 1982 F1 car of 294 kmh at the end of the 650 m back straight. Designers considered data from a leading V8 Supercar team, and current V8 Supercars see 250 kmh on the back straight and 160 kmh through the sweepier after pit straight (Turn 1). Designers also considered data from a leading V8 Supercar team and expect the current tourers should see 260 kmh on the back straight and 160 kmh through the right-hand sweeper after pit straight The track's north-south orientation means drivers face the late-afternoon sun momentarily in turn two. The 50-car racing pits and viewing mounds are all on the outside of the circuit. With no visual obstructions inside the track, spectators at any point are able to follow cars for a full lap.
