Drivers Ed and Track Insurance Progressive Exchange

The following is a copy of an email exchange that I had with Progressive Insurance. It good news for those of us looking for someone who will provide coverage at a Drivers Education course, regardless of the venue. I will post more when I get the list of exclusions and the actual policy.

Does it matter where the Driver's Education course is to be held? The

one that I am thinking of attending is to be held at Brainerd International Raceway. I've heard of other policies that specifically exclude ANY activities that take place off public roads on dedicated tracks.

That would be great.
The Driver's Education to which I am referring is one of several

sponsored by car clubs, in which instruction on car control and driving is given in a classroom, and then students are sent out on a closed course (not public roads) to practice. I would be using my own car, and no one else would be driving it. In some of the sessions, an instructor may accompany me in the car, but there will not be any other students in my car.

Unfortunately, I just got the following update:


Dear Mr. Jenney,
I came across your e-mails this morning and wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to you for some misinformation which was previously sent to you. We informed you that the course you are looking at taking at Brainerd International Raceway would be covered; however, this is not the case. We do not offer coverage while you are driving your vehicle on any type of race track. I am sorry that you were not given this information.
We mailed a policy contract to your address as you requested. In the policy contract, you will find sections called "Exclusions" in each part of the auto policy including Liability and Physical Damage. These sections will specifically spell out any areas or situations which we exclude coverage. In these sections, it states Coverage will not apply for loss to any vehicle resulting from, or sustained during practice or preparation for:
a. any pre-arranged or organized racing, stunting, speed, or demolition contest or activity; or
b. any driving activity conducted on a permanent or temporary racetrack or racecourse.
Progressive Direct encourages everyone to take advantage of any opportunity that allows you to improve your driving skills, and we are concerned with the safety of all drivers on the roads. Safer drivers allow us to introduce lower insurance rates to consumers. That is why we offer a defensive driver discount in many states. I understand this is not currently available in Minnesota; however, we continually look for opportunities to reward our customers who maintain good driving records. Please check with us to see if this discount is available in the future.
