By 1908 international motorsport was conducted at the Circuit Baix Penedès with the Copa Catalunya. In 1923 the first Great automobile Prize of Spain in the permanent Sitges Terramar circuit was run near Barcelona. In 1932 a race was held on a street circuit with the start in the Montjuïc Park, wooded parkland on a hill above the city's harbour. The course of the 1933 east circuit of that race became the Montjuïc Circuit proper. In 1968, Montjuïc was selected as the venue for the Spanish Grand Prix, which had been held at the Jarama circuit in Madrid, with the inaugural Grand Prix being held there on May 4 1969. The variable character of the anticlockwise course (with one half slow and the other very fast) made setting the cars up correctly a challenge. The 1975 Spanish Grand Prix was marked by tragedy. Many drivers felt the circuit was unsafe, and twice world champion Emerson Fittipaldi withdrew in protest before the start of the race. On lap 26 the vehicle of Rolf Stommelen left the track, killing five people. The race was stopped at half way and half of the points were given, with Jochen Mass recorded as the winner. Formula One never returned to the circuit after the accident. The circuit of Montjuic was also the scene of the 24 hours of Montjuic, a motorcycle endurance race. Since 1991 the Spanish Grand Prix has been held at the Circuit de Catalunya on the outskirts of Barcelona.
Ya desde 1908, se disputaban carreras internacionales en Cataluña con la Copa Catalunya, en el Circuito del Baix Penedès. En 1923 se disputó el primer Gran Premio automovilístico de España en el circuito permanente Sitges Terramar, cerca de Barcelona. En 1932 se disputa una carrera en las calles, partiendo del Parque de Montjuïc en Barcelona y desde 1933 se utiliza este circuito que desde esa época tiene prácticamente el mismo recorrido. En 1968, España consiguió la organización de un gran premio puntuable para el Campeonato del Mundo de Fórmula 1. Ese año, el Gran Premio de España se llevó a cabo en Madrid, en el circuito del Jarama. Al mismo tiempo, se acordaba alternar el escenario del gran premio entre dicho circuito y el de Montjuïc. El primer Gran Premio de España disputado en el circuito de Montjuïc se llevaría a cabo el 4 de mayo de 1969. Era un circuito donde se circulaba en sentido opuesto a las manecillas del reloj. Tenía dos partes, una lenta y una muy rápida, lo que representaba todo un reto para encontrar la configuración ideal de los vehículos. El Gran Premio de España de 1975 estuvo marcado por la tragedia. Durante las prácticas hubo incidentes que hicieron dudar sobre la seguridad del circuito. Emerson Fittipaldi, dos veces ganador del campeonato, se retiró de la carrera en protesta después de la primera vuelta. En la vuelta 26, El vehículo de Rolf Stommelen chocó matando a cinco espectadores. La carrera fue detenida y se declaró ganador a Jochen Mass, obteniendo la mitad de los puntos.
