Originally constructed in 1958-60 as Atlanta International Raceway, the Superspeedway that lies there now bears little resemblance to opening day. The rechristened Atlanta Motor Speedway was reconfigured in 1997 to become a quad-oval, with the only remaining original features being the tower and Weaver grandstand on the backstretch. In 2004, an F2 tornado ripped through AMS causing tens of millions of dollars worth of damage, yet in miraculous fashion this phoenix played host to the Fall NASCAR event mere months later. Always one of the fastest tracks in the NASCAR schedule, AMS has also played host to IRL events, where the 60' wide track and 24° banking provide for very competitive racing. AMS is also home to a variety of other events from Thursday Night Thunder (Legends racing) to the annual NOPI Nationals Supershow.
