Introduction

The TT Circuit Assen has been the home of motorcycle racing for 77 years and hosts the Dutch TT and since 1992 the World Superbikes, two classic events on the World Championship Calendar. These classic events attract massive crowds and of course a festive atmosphere.

The history of the TT Circuit Assen goes back to 1925. Only during the second World War (1940 - 1945) were no events staged. Until 1954 the Dutch TT was held on public roads, and in 1955 a special 7.7 Km. long circuit was built. In 1955 the 25th Dutch TT was held on this new circuit, which was also suitable for sidecar races.

Until the early seventies the circuit was only used once a year for the Dutch TT. Nowadays the circuit is used for several World Championships and international and national race meetings, but the most important annual event next to the Dutch TT is the Dutch Round of the World Superbikes.

At the end of the 1998 racing season, the TT Circuit Assen started a new renovation, which would be done in three stages and take three years to complete. Stage one was completed in May 1999. A brand new Main Grandstand (6.500 seats), an enlarged Hospitality Area with 20 new VIP-rooms and 10 Founders Lounges, a new Paddock-restaurant and VIP-restaurant were completed in this first stage of the renovation, which cost over 10 million Euro’s.

Directly after the 1999 racing season, stage 2 of the renovation of the TT Circuit Assen accommodation was started. A new racecontrol tower, 34 up-to-date sized and equipped pit boxes (size 12 x 6 metres with showers and toilets), a 1.100 square metres new media centre with 21 commentary booths. The shortening of the race-track was postponed for several years. After the racing season 2001 the circuit was altered, by widening the paddock-area. In order to do this, the end of the Strubben corner, the Veenslang main straight up to the Stekkenwal corner was renewed and situated 50 metres more eastwards. At the southern part of the track the Mandeveen and Duikersloot corners were moved some 10 metres inwards, to create a longer run-off area and gravel beds. Also a resurfacing of the tarmac was done in the winter period 2001-2002, so the 2002 and 2003 Dutch TT was raced on the renewed track, measuring 6,027 metres.

In the current situation, apart from the grandstands (60,000 seats) the circuit is fully bordered with earth banks for a further 100,000 spectators, in total 160.000 spectators.

The parking area around the circuit consists of 850,000 square metres, sufficient for 25,000 cars and 20,000 motorbikes.
